A small group of people within the church  -  for more than 20 years  -  has been actively supporting newly arriving refugee families from strife-torn regions of the world.

Under the auspices of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, the group is involved in meeting, supporting and settling refugee families as they arrive in Hobart to live.  Members of the group work closely with a new family for a period of  6 months or more, helping them to access services, set up their own home and integrate into the wider community.

The new families are supported to find a place to worship in line with their religious beliefs. They may be Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu or Christian.

In recent years a large number of Karen refugee families from Burma have chosen to make the Hobart Baptist Church their home.

Fund-raising stalls form an integral part of the work of the group in order to provide funds to assist with the settlement needs of the refugees.
